Sweet & Spicy Brussel Sprouts (Air-Fried)

Brussel sprouts! Yuck! Or so I thought, until recent years. Growing up, my sister would steam Brussel sprouts in the house and they would smell so bad, it completely turned me off. But then I started having them chopped up in salad and really started to love them! 

Recently I was at my moms house and she’s always loved to mix jams with something to make a new dip or glaze, and she had mixed hot pepper jelly with sweet baby rays BBQ sauce to top her veggie tots. It was absolutely delicious! I love veggie tots but we’ve been trying to introduce our toddler to more vegetables other than potatoes (lol) so I thought I would give it a try on some air-fried sprouts, and we loved them! Toddler not so much, but we’ll get there…

First I rinsed and sliced the Brussel sprouts in half, cutting off any bad ends that I didn’t want to eat. Then I decided to soak them in a bowl of cold water while my air-fryer preheated. This step isn’t necessary but recently I read it could help the sprouts to cook a bit softer so I figured I’d give it a try! While the sprouts are soaking, I set my air-fryer to preheat to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the air-fryer is preheated, I added the Brussel sprouts and drizzled them with olive oil, tossing them a little bit to make sure they were coated, and put them in for 10 minutes. My air-fryer has a nice rack inside that helps the air flow so I decided not to flip them, but you could do so halfway if you’re afraid one side will burn.

As the Brussel sprouts cooked, I mixed up my sauce. In a small bowl I combined my hot pepper jelly with the BBQ sauce. You can choose to do however much you want, but since I was serving it to my toddler I wanted it more sweet than spicy so I chose to do 1 Tbsp of hot pepper jelly with 3 Tbsp of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce, and my husband agreed it was the perfect ratio!

Once the Brussel sprouts cook for 10 minutes, I pulled them out and drizzled the sauce over them in the air-fryer pan and gently tossed them so that most, or all the sides were coated. Then I put them back in to cook for 5 more minutes.

Sweet & Spicy Brussel Sprouts (Air-Fried)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Brussel sprouts
  • 3 Tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 1 Tbsp hot pepper jelly
  • Olive oil (to drizzle)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse and slice Brussel sprouts in half.
  2.  Soak in bowl of cold water while air fryer preheats (optional).
  3.  Preheat air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4.  Add Brussel sprouts to the air fryer and drizzle with olive oil.
  5.  Cook for 10 minutes.Air Fried
  6.  While the Brussel sprouts are cooking, in a small bowl, mix your BBQ sauce with your hot pepper jelly.
  7.  After 10 minutes in the air fryer, toss Brussel sprouts in sauce mixture and cook for 5 more minutes. Enjoy!
